POLICY STATEMENT

The treatment of a pet's behaviour problem may require training and/or the use of special diagnostic skills, therapeutics and surgery. The involvement of a veterinary surgeon in these cases is therefore believed to be essential to safeguard the welfare of the patient. Disease is almost always expressed by a change in the animal's behaviour which may cause concern to its owner.

The group produces policy statements on issues that it feels are of specific importance.

STUDY GROUP STRUCTURE

The study group has been founded to promote the study, practice and teaching of behaviour therapy in companion animals within a veterinary context. It recognises that both veterinary surgeons and non-veterinarians are important to the development of this field and would like to invite membership application from any individual interested in promoting these objectives. As the group is affiliated to the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) full membership is restricted to veterinary surgeons, whilst associate membership may be applied for by all other individuals. The organisational committee consists of both full and associate members to ensure that the views of all members are represented and encourage both a forum for discussion and a focus for the dissemination of information on animal behaviour therapy. This is achieved through the publication of a newsletter/journal and the running of courses, lectures and meetings.
